La photographie d’architecture a pour objet de mettre en valeur un espace ou un ouvrage, d’en restituer les volumes, matières, textures et couleurs, en jouant avec les lignes et en dévoilant parfois son environnement selon le propos narratif souhaité.
Pour ce faire, un soin particulier est apporté à la perspective qui implique le choix d’un cadrage mais aussi un décentrement de l’axe de prise de vue par rapport au capteur d’image, permettant ainsi artificiellement une mise à hauteur d’ouvrage et la conservation des lignes parallèles.
Si l’on peut affirmer qu’un ouvrage est un objet comme les autres, force est de constater qu’à la différence de la photographie de produit réalisée en studio, la lumière solaire impose un timing précis pour la réalisation des prises de vue. En effet, l’azimut et la hauteur solaire sont les deux variables d’ajustement à la disposition du photographe d’architecture. Autre différence notable, le photographe d’architecture devra se satisfaire d’une seule source lumineuse pour « construire » sa lumière: le soleil. Enfin, la qualité de lumière souhaitée sera fonction de la météo choisie. Ciel gris pour un rendu homogène et une lumière douce, ciel bleu ensoleillé pour un rendu plus graphique avec une lumière plus dure et des ombres portées marquées.
